The Lakes
District Museum archives facility has an extensive collection of both
primary and secondary sources. Our archivist will be more than happy to
assist you and welcomes appointments or e-mail requests . Depending on
the depth of search required, a fee may apply. These are listed below.
Independent researchers are welcomed by appointment.
Primary Material
Family History:
Births, Deaths and Marriages
We have
a small collection of birth notices for the Wakatipu district which mainly
belong to those higher on the socio-economic scale. For the areas of Arrowtown,
Lower Shotover and Gibbston we have a database of birth dates from school
registers. The collection also includes:
- Hard copies
of the Burial Registers for Queenstown, Arrowtown, Frankton, Kingston,
Skippers and Glenorchy
- Microfiche
copies of many of the smaller cemeteries around Otago.
- A fairly
complete collection of obituaries from the local newspapers. Specific
searches around dates can be easily done.
- Details
from most of the marriage registers have been entered onto our database.
- The Catholic
Marriage Index for Otago and Southland 1855 - 1920 and the index to
Otago and part of Southland Presbyterian marriages held at Knox Church
are available on microfiche.
ORAL HISTORY
The Oral
Archive at the Lakes District Museum is recognised as one of the most
comprehensive in the country. Each recorded interview is abstracted in
an easy to use format, making information about a particular subject simple
to locate. Our indices relating to the Oral Archive include an index of
people interviewed as well as an index of people mentioned on the tapes.
NEWSPAPERS
The archives
at the Lakes District Museum include a fine collection of original newspapers
as well as newspapers on microfilm. Our earliest original newspapers date
from 1867. The current newspapers on microfilm consist of :
- 'Cromwell
Argus' 1876 - 1878
- 'Lake
County Press' 1887 - 1910
- 'Lake
Wakatip Mail' 1885 - 1939
PHOTOGRAPHS
The
museum's photograph collection is rapidly expanding and presently includes
over 8000 pieces, mainly of landscapes around the Wakatipu Basin, but
also many photographs of the pioneers and their descendants. Photographic
reproductions can be made of most of the photographs in our collection
with excellent results. Not only do we hold many formal portraits and
landscapes but also candid photographs of men and women coming to grips
with a hard life in a new country.

OTHER
In addition
to the above we also have directories and electoral rolls, survey plans
with indices, council records, mining records and military lists. As policy
all answered queries and correspondence are kept in a series of envelopes
which are sorted alphabetically by surname. These can be treasure troves
of information, contacts and family trees.
LIBRARY
The archives
facility has a collection of over 200 books, many of which are of interest
to family historians. The books cover the Wakatipu specifically and also
Otago generally.
We also
have addresses of other museums and research institutions around the country
to help you in your search for information about a period of New Zealand's
history or your family's history.
