Post Office - History

History of the Arrowtown Post and Telegraph Office

Arrowtown’s iconic Post and Telegraph Office was built in 1915 after the original building was destroyed by fire. The site has been the communication hub of Arrowtown since the discovery of gold in 1862.

After the viability of the postal services in Arrowtown was threatened in 1991, the Lakes District Museum took over the running of the postal agency. Recognising the significance of the building and importance of retaining postal services in the village, the Museum, with strong community support, purchased the building in 1995.

The survival of the post services in Arrowtown depend on the wonderful community businesses who support us, along with all our dedicated locals.
